We are proud of our growing relationship with the Cincinnati chapter of the Ukrainian National Women's League of America. Not only do they hold their monthly meetings in our space, but we also are the host site for their new series of Ukrainian Fine Art Workshops.
Last month, we enjoyed the first workshop, with about 20 people from within our church community and from surrounding communities joined in the making of a Ukrainian necklace. The workshop began with a description and display of traditional Ukrainian jewelry. The presenter, Oksana, explained the importance and cultural significance of each stone, gem and crucifixes used in the jewelry pieces. She also explained the importance of jewelry to Ukrainian culture. Mothers and grandmothers traditionally passed down a piece of coral or gem every year of a daughter’s birthday to build a keepsake necklace. When the daughter married, the treasured necklace would be worn or could be used to purchase a variety of things such as a parcel of land for farming. After the presentation, the group sat around tables to make beautiful necklaces. The best part of the event was sitting among the Ukrainian women who were present, getting to know them and learning about their families and thoughts about the war. Most of all, everyone had a lot of fun!
The next folk art workshop is scheduled for Saturday, April 1st at MSPC fellowship hall from 3-5pm. This workshop will be "Ukrainian Pysanky". During this 2 hour workshop you will be introduced to the history of Ukrainian Easter Egg decoration techniques and will make your own masterpiece to take home. All materials are provided.
